Pharmacien major à vingt ans, attaché à l'armée d'Italie, Serullas fut professeur à Metz, à Paris et entra à l'Académie des Sciences en 1829 à la place du… chimiste Vauquelin. Il venait d'être nommé professeur de chimie au Muséum quand il fut emporté par l'épidémie de choléra. On doit à Serullas d'importantes découvertes qui portent principalement sur le brome et le potassium. Serullas découvrit le protoiodure de carbone et l'iodure de cyanogène. Bel exemplaire à part quelques rousseurs.

We know from his friend and biographer Lodibert that he sometimes had "his hands burnt, his clothes lacerated, his face furrowed by streams of fire, whirlwinds of flame, splinters from his broken instruments".
