"Die Grundzüge des Verfahrens stellen sich demnach folgendermassen: Ein automatisch wirkender Apparat liefert eine Luft von hohem, genauen bestimmten Gehalt an Chloroformdampf. Sie wird durch einen Schlauch in die Maske oder einen geöffneten Mund eingeführt. Ein Hahn reguliert die zufliessenden Mengen. Auf ihm ist verzeichnet, wie viel Chloroform (in Dampfform) pro Minute in jeder Stellung duchfliesst. Der Unterschied gegen Paul Bert's Verfahren ist evident. Denn er stellt eine Luft von so niedrigem Chloroformgehalt dar, dass nur diese geathmet werden darf; und das zwang ihn dazu, die anschliessende Maske zu verwenden und sehr grosse Quantitäten des Gemisches herzustellen. Ich führe eine so concentrierte Mischung ein, das eine Verdünnung durch die freie Athmung Bedingung ist, und brauche nur relativ geringe Mengen des Gemisches." Zit.a.ob. Arb. Julius Geppert (1856-1937) beschäftigte sich ausgiebig mit der Physiologie der Atmung und der Pharmakologie der Dämpfe und Gase, insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit der Anästhesie. In Berlin arbeitete er eng mit dem Physiologen Nathan Zuntz zusammen und konstruierte den Zuntz-Geppertschen Respirationsapparat. Auch ein Narkoseapparat, der die Messung der Blutgase und die Dosierung von Chloroform ermöglichte, geht auf ihn zurück.
