(B&W frontispiece) "A rollicking, speedy story of a modern girl, a business girl, very much alive and up-to-date," set in a Chicago suburb. The title character is the sole support for her miserable family (whining mother, useless father, a couple of problem brothers, and even a set of younger twin siblings), and by age twenty had already worked as a stenographer, a ticket-seller at a movie theater (and later its manager and part owner), and an insurance agent. Folio, wrappers, 84 pp. Light soiling, previous owner's signature at top edge. Very good for this, otherwise really quite better. See scans. Large, "bedsheet" size…periodical, at a turning point in its history as a fashion bellwether here in this issue. Fashion sketches are flappery and elongated, as they would indeed also be with the full advent of its art deco period in ensuing years, but this cover is prior to the unique Helen Dryden covers period, and the art and editing is not yet fully awash in deco mindset. In addition to the fashion, coooking and homemaking pages, though, there is serious fiction and full vintage illustration of it here, including Zona Gale's "A Thief in the Night", Irving Bacheller's "The Secret of Being Happily Married", Margaret Culkin Banning's "The Fortune Hunter", "The Weakest Link", by University of Michigan sports legend Fielding H. Yost, and Dixie Willson's "Little Texas". Some of the celebrated artists for these works include Clara Elsene Peck, Joseph Simont, Gerald Leake and Paul Meylan. A tour de force in the fiction & illustration department - and that isn't even the strong point for this Butterick publication, which is a living timeline in the history of American fashion. Nice. (B&W frontispiece, 3 B&W plates) Monsieur Guelpa, in solving "the most baffling mur…der mystery Paris had ever known . goes deeply into the lives of the great French family involved, lays bare their romances, their relations with one another and with the public, the sources of their wealth, the reasons for financial embarrassment, the count's rich marriage in America, his wife's early love affair, the intrigues of domestics." (Wow, who does this Guelpa guy think he is, Lew Archer?) Thompson, primarily a literary critic and poet, turned his attention to mystery fiction for the first time with this late-career novel introducing Mr. Guelpa, "the famous French detective" (with no first name, it would appear). Thompson did a couple of other books in the genre, but the only other "Mr. Guelpa" novel (and that was its title) was published in late 1925, a few months after the author's death in June of that year -- hence the "series," if you can call it that, consists of just two books. (We also have a copy of that second and final installment for sale as of this writing, making ReadInk perhaps the only bookseller in the world to be offering the entire "Mr. Guelpa" series!) NOISBN.
