This lavishly illustrated and authoritative book is a comprehensive study of the South Downs' ecological, cultural, and land-use challenges, published by Packard Publishing. It explores conservation issues at a pivotal moment when the South Downs National Park was under consideration. The book highlights the rolling chalk hills, escarpments, river valleys, sea cliffs, and woodlands that define the South Downs. It emphasizes their biodiversity and cultural resonance, having inspired writers and artists for centuries. The Downs are described as working countryside, shaped by farming and forestry practices. The book examines how these activities both sustain and threaten the landscape. Ref RRR 1.

Add to basket22 x 14cm. Hardcover with dustjacket, 54pp. Illustrated dustjacket by Gerald Wilde. The first British edition of Smart's poetic prose novel. The dustjacket has been reinforced with paper at some point (now protected in archival sleeve), otherwise complete and unclipped. Reviewer Ingrid Norton wrote of it at the time as a "wildly poetic novel" and "a howl of a book, shot through with vivid imagery and ecstatic language". From the dustjacket: "Elizabeth Smart has written an acute and sensitive psychological study. It is a novel, but it is autobiographical in form, being written in the first person; but it covers only a single situation, and a short length of time. It is a love-story, but it is concerned not so much with the outward events of the story as with the feelings and situation of the protagonist. It might be described, therefore, as a drama of feeling as opposed to a drama of action. At the same time it becomes almost a fable of our contemporary society, in which to love is so difficult. Miss Smart, whose first book this is writes beautifully in an evocative and essentially poetic prose which should delight all those who have a keen interest in contemporary writing." Apart from the restoration under the jacket, a very attractive example of the first edition, internally clean, tight and bright. Very good condition.
