Das Buch versammelt 54 kurze Geschichten, Anekdoten und, wie der Autor sie nennt, Schnurren , vor allem aus der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Aus dem Vorwort des Autors: Die nachfolgenden kleinen Schnurren haben nicht den Zweck, das Ansehen unserer Flotte, wie sie vor 30 bis 50 Jahren war, herabzusetzen. Zwar gab es der Wunderlichkeiten genug; jetzt aber, wo wir wirklich eine Flotte haben, können jene Spaßhaftigkeiten ohne Sorge, daß dem schönen großen Ganzen dadurch etwas geschadet würde, erzählt werden. (.) . es soll beim Fachmanne das Andenken an einige Originale wach gehalten, dem Nichtfachmanne aber ein Einblick gegeben werden in Zeiten, wo mit unzureichenden Mitteln wenn nicht alles, so jedenfalls zu vieles erreicht werden sollte (.). Dies Buch könnte man auch nennen Geschichten aus der Kinderstube der Flotte .
