Zuerst probierten es der Große Kurfürst, Friedrich I., Friedrich Wilhelm I. und Friedrich II. mit Geboten und zum Teil drakonischen Strafen. Berühmt wurde die Vorschrift, daß ein Einwohner, der heiraten wollte, zuerst einen Obstbaum pflanzen mußte. Mitte des 18. Jahrhundert gesellten sich zu diesen teilweise recht despotischen Vorgaben von oben auch einzelne Initiativen von privater Seite. Ein wirklicher Durchbruch gelang dem Kernobst aber erst im 19.
