A diferencia de sus coetáneos, es el único que, haciendo acopio de una gran valentía, solicitó a Arnold Schönberg ser aceptado como su alumno, lo que… lo convirtió en el único discípulo español del maestro vienés. Tras formarse con Schönberg, apostó por la defensa y difusión de la nueva música (parafraseando a Adorno), tanto con su propia obra como con la organización de conciertos. Tras la Guerra Civil se exilió en Inglaterra, donde desarrolló el resto de su carrera profesional hasta su muerte. La correspondencia que aquí se presenta tiene un gran valor no sólo por poner de relieve la relación personal del compositor español con una figura clave en el desarrollo de la música contemporánea, sino porque en ella se recogen nuevos datos biográficos e historiográficos, así como cuestiones de índole musical (compositivas, teóricas, conciertos?) que son de gran importancia no sólo para entender la labor creativa de Gerhard, sino para dimensionar su papel de primer orden en la historia de la música españ.
