Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Hardcover in olive green cloth lettered in gilt. Tight, near fine copy, lettereing somewhat dulled. Issued without dust jacket. 239 pp. with reference list and with front and rear double page music and lyrics to related songs ("The Spirit of Pioneers" and "Paean of Praise" by Grace and Joseph Pennypacker. Biographical sketches of notable early women in the history of Haddonfield, located in Camden County in southwestern New Jersey. Among the women profiled are Elizabeth Haddon, spouse of the 17th century John Haddon for whom the town was named; Grace Coolidge Pennypacker, born 1858, who would write songs and poems inspired by the town; Julia Bedford Gill, who as a young girl visited the town by railroad from New York City and eventually married Ephraim Gill in 1859. Mrs Gill was instrumental in the establishment of the Haddonfield Historical Society; Dolly Paine Madison, the future First Lady, and several other. Author Emma Gibson has interspersed short, single scene dramatic pieces of her creation into the work as well.
