Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Oblong Folio Album, approx. 38cm x 27.5cm. Contemporary half calf, rubbed. Internally clean, occasional show through from glue or from foxing on mount, most plates in good or very good condition though often snipped to corners, and occasionally cut to foot, with loss to names or caption but not to image. Armorial book plate to front cover and to inner paste-down Crescit Sub Pondere Virtus (the family motto of the McCann tribe, Ireland). In total 58 images, all full page, mostly lithographs between 1820-1840s, showing scenery, European sights, humorous lithographs from the Napoleonic campaigns, and so on with an excellent representation of well-known early European lithographers and publishers, including Lemercier, Delpech, Haghe, de Villain, and Gihaut freres, There is no accompanying text, other than the occasional hand-written inscription, but a reasonable interpretation would be that they are put together as a kind-of grand tour album, probably sourced in part at least a print shop in France (one lithograph has a blind-stamp of the print seller Bance: Rue St Denis, a Paris, and there are many views from France or of French scenes). A particular highlight are a rare series of four excellent hand-coloured aquatints of Swiss views of Berne after Lory as follows: Maison de Paysan Pres D Unterseen; Vue d une Partie des Environs de Thon; Vue de la Bluemlisalp et du Niesen prise depuis l isle superieure pres de Thoune; Vue Prise de Brunnen vers le Canton d Ury. Other plates include Major Kennedy s House-Simla (Himalayas), Itinerant snake-catcher, a charming image of a printer-seller, le Marchand d Images, dated 1842 with partial hand colour, a Byronic figure wooing a maiden in a classical setting on an island shore, captioned Valereo Pirano, 1842, and an impressive lithograph by Lory Vue de la Mer de Glace, prise du Montanvert (en Savoie). A fascinating compilation. Further images provided gladly upon request.
