La Famille en islam recourt à des sources arabes de type varié (sources religieuses, traités juridiques, biographies, hagiographies, discours éthique et prescriptions éducatives) pour retracer modèles et discours à l'époque médiévale, tout en les confrontant à l'état de la recherche. Le vocabulaire arabe de la parenté dans les sources anciennes permet d'historiciser des notions complexes. L'usage des noms dans la famille suggère la richesse des relations familiales.
