Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. H. M. C. S. One Photographer s impressions of the Royal Canadian Navy in W. W. II; by Gilbert A, Milne; copyright, Thomas Allen Limited, 1960. Bookplate of Bruce S. C. Oland. From the blurb H. M. C. S. is a collection of photographs taken by Milne while he was covering the most exciting assignment of his life the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II. It is personal, vivid and exciting. From the introduction In peacetime, the Canadian sailor proudly wears on his cap a ribbon, bearing the name of his ship. But in wartime the identifying tally is removed, to be replaced by one that shows the letters H. M. C. S. It actually became a symbol of the Royal Canadian Navy as a whole, and all of that was achieved, by all ranks, in the long war at sea. For this reason, this book bears the name H. M. C. S. This book comes from the library of Bruce Oland an interesting association. In 1937, Bruce registered in the Royal Canadian Artillery Halifax 1st Coast Regiment, through which he served during the Second World War. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1941 and Major in 1950. By 1951, Bruce decided that his true interests were in the Navy and he transferred to the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, accepting the lower rank of Lieutenant with HMCS Scotian. By 1970, Bruce had climbed the ranks to Commodore and was appointed Senior Naval Reserve Advisor to the Director General, Reserves, and Aide-de-Camp to Governor General Roland Michener. Bruce was a member of the Oland Breweries family and he became President in 1971. He died in 2009 at the age of 91. This book bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering, 141 pages measuring 273mm X 215mm, is in very good condition in a good dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. The book contains numerous black and white photographs of the ships, sea and sailors a wonderful tribute to H. M. C. S.
