No Binding. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. TYPED LETTER on dizzy gillespie Letterhead and is dated February 23, 1983. Letter states,"Dear Mr. Volpe, It was nice hearing from you and sorry that you've had some bad experiences with your psy------- (Dizzy). I have over these years developed set answers for people who make smart cracks about my name. Sample: "Are you Dizzy? - Literally or figuretivly Speaking?" "yes but not stupid." "Did your mother name you Dizzy"? If you would like to know more about your namesake, I have an autobiography out called "To BE or Not To BOP." With Al Fraser, Published by Doubleday. Ask your parents to get it for yuor birthday. I do consider you my friend." Letter is completely hand written and is signed "Dizzy Gillespie" in blue ink. Includes letter and envelope. Letter has normal mailing folds and envelope has been opened, otherwise in FINE condition. Born on October 21, 1917, in Cheraw, South Carolina, Dizzy Gillespie, known for his "swollen" cheeks and signature (uniquely angled) trumpet's bell, got his start in the mid-1930s by working in prominent swing bands, including those of Benny Carter and Charlie Barnet. He later created his own band and developed his own signature style, known as "bebop," and worked with musical greats like Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Earl Hines, Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington. Gillespie's best-known compositions include "Oop Bob Sh' Bam," "Groovin' High," "Salt Peanuts," "A Night in Tunisia" and "Johnny Come Lately." Gillespie died in New Jersey in 1993. Today, he is considered one of the most influential figures of jazz and bebop. Inscribed by Author(s).

Add to basketA most unusual jazz souvenir. The owner evidently took (perhaps wore) this tie to gigs and assembled an impressive collection of top-line autographs. From the personnel involved, we infer that the tie's owner was based in France. The groups include all of Bill Coleman's band from European tours of the early 1950s and a similar bunch for Mezz Mezzrow. There is a heavy representation of Ellingtonians, a clutch of Basie-ites including the Count, and a number of Black musicians who chose to make their homes in France after the Second World War. Because of the difficulties of signing on the silk surface, a few have blocked out their names rather than signing fluently, and a couple of signatures have resisted our attempt to decipher them. Starry single names include Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Roy Eldridge, Lil Armstrong, and Lionel Hampton; eminent Ellingtonians Russell Procope, Don Byas, Kay Davis, Jimmy Hamilton, Alva McCain, Ray Nance, Butch Ballard, Nelson Williams, and Harry Carney; Basie and a pair of bandmates, Wendell Culley and Marshal Royal; Bill Coleman with Zutty Singleton, Buddy Banks, Randy Downes, and Dick Wells; Mezzrow accompanied by Buck Clayton, Red Richards, Claude Sedric, "Taps" Miller and dancer Della Grayson from his 1953 tour of France. Pale blue silk tie with textured diagonal stripe. Somewhat worn, quite literally, and with a few small spots, some signatures a touch faded but in the main strong and legible, but overall very good.

Add to basketExcellent double album collecting Dizzy's first outings as leader, here with the signatures of Dizzy together with 10 other eminent participants seemingly fortuitously gathered at the Nice Jazz Festival in 1976, original photocopy programme for both days loosely inserted; Dexter Gordon, Shelly Manne, Percy Heath, Sonny Stitt, Harry Sweets Edison, Slam Stewart, John Lewis, Jimmy Heath, Milt Jackson & Sarah Vaughan. "All of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie's earliest sessions as a leader, recordings that have greatly influenced jazz to the present time and set the standard for bebop. In addition to "Blue 'N' Boogie," there are seven classics with Charlie Parker (Sarah Vaughan guests on "Lover Man"), a session with Sonny Stitt and eight exciting big-band performances including "Things to Come." This essential music. concludes with three songs from a fun but less-significant small-group session from 1950" (Scott Yanow, allmusic). Wonderful collection of signatures from contributors to a sequence of ground-breaking recordings. 2 12-inch vinyl LP records in pictorial gatefold sleeve, lined paper sleeves. Disc rings to front and back slicks, some scuffing of the spine, discs in excellent condition, bright and scuff free, very good.
