William Gladstone was a British statesman and was Prime Minister for a total of 12 years between 1868 and 1894. He viewed the Catholic Church as a tyrannical institution and wrote a pamphlet called The Vatican Decrees in their Bearing on Civil Allegiance to express his outrage at the declaration of papal infallibility in 1870. This is a follow-up pamphlet in which he responds to critics of his earlier anti-Catholic work.

W.Gladstone tribute entitled "A Rare Young Man" being an appreciation of the Memoirs and Letters of Sidney Gilchrist Thomas published in "The Youth's Companion" Aug 11th 1892 loosely inserted.
