Front pastedown has ownership inscription of John Garstin Junior 1818 and front free endpaper the ownership inscription of J.R.A Bailey Bailey was the founder of Drum magazine in South Africa and a leading figure in the anti-apartheid movement. In this controversial and celebrated book, Glanvil[l] sought to demonstrate the existence of witches whom, he claimed had supernatural and magical powers. Glanvil argued that those who were sceptical about such witches were like the Sadducees, a Jewish sect, contemporary with Jesus, which denied the immortality of the soul. Glanvil's book describes a number of supernatural happenings. At the time it was important and influential, strongly influencing Cotton Mather in his Discourse on Witchcraft (1689) and the Salem witch trials held 1692-3.
