Teil: Der Krieg. - Ernst wächst behütet in einer süddeutschen Kleinstadt des späten Kaiserreichs auf, und seine Welt scheint zunächst intakt. Doch tatsächlich ist die Gesellschaft gezeichnet durch die grundlegenden Konfliktlinien der Zeit: Antisemitismus, politische Kämpfe zwischen Linken und Rechten, Armen und Reichen. Der Krieg überbrückt zunächst alle diese Gräben, doch je länger er dauert, desto deutlicher wird, wie fragwürdig der Hurrapatriotismus und wie brüchig die bisherige Ordnung ist. Glaeser verknüpft die äußeren Ereignisse mit dem Innenleben seines Protagonisten, der sich sexuelle Erfahrungen ebenso wie die eigene Meinung gegen die prüde Welt der Väter und deren hohl gewordenen Moralismus erkämpfen muss: "Der Krieg, das sind unsere Eltern." Als Glaesers Roman 1928 erscheint, trifft er den Nerv der Zeit. Er bringt das Trauma jener Generation auf den Punkt, die ihre Desillusionierung hinter den Frontlinien des Ersten Weltkriegs erlebt. 1933 wurden Glasers Schriften als pazifistisch und marxistisch verbrannt, woraufhin er in die Schweiz emigrierte. 1939 kehrte er überraschend nach Deutschland zurück und wurde Soldat und Schriftleiter einer Wehrmachtszeitung. Nach 1945 publizierte Glaeser noch mehrere Bücher, mit denen er allerdings an seine früheren Erfolge nicht anknüpfen konnte.
