Originalbroschur. Condition: Gut. XIII, 198 S. Von Wilfried Ruff signiert. Hand signed dedication on the first blank end-page reads: 'To, Mr, Tony Cox - with best regards, Max Glatt' - London Aug 84. - MAX GLATT: Max Glatt (1912-2002) was a pioneering psychiatrist whose work had a profound influence on the understanding and treatment of alcoholism and drug dependence in the UK. He is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern addiction psychiatry and was instrumental in shifting addiction from being viewed as a moral failing to being understood as a medical and psychological condition requiring specialist treatment. - Born in Germany, Glatt fled Nazi persecution in the 1930s and settled in Britain, where he trained as a doctor and psychiatrist. His own experience of displacement and survival is often seen as informing his deep compassion for marginalised and stigmatised people. During the 1950s and 1960s, when alcoholism was still largely neglected within mainstream medicine, Glatt was a strong advocate for structured, humane treatment approaches. - He became Medical Director at Warlingham Park Hospital and later worked at St Bernard's Hospital in Southall, where he helped establish some of the first specialised inpatient units for alcoholism within the NHS. These units integrated medical care, psychological support, and group-based recovery, drawing in part on principles from Alcoholics Anonymous while remaining clinically grounded. - Glatt is perhaps best known for the "Glatt Chart" (sometimes called the Glatt stages of alcoholism), which mapped the progressive physical, psychological, and social deterioration associated with alcohol dependence. The chart was widely used in treatment and education to help patients and professionals understand addiction as a developing illness rather than a single failing. - Beyond clinical work, Glatt wrote extensively and was a passionate educator, committed to improving care and reducing stigma. His legacy lives on in addiction services, therapeutic communities, and the continued emphasis on dignity, structure, and hope in recovery-oriented treatment. - Condition & Description of the book: Softcover book. 43 years old. Little bit of scuffing to the edges and folds, otherwise it has stood the test of time. 530 pages, very browned which includes a 'conclusion' to the rear and then follows help information and a fairly large index over 23 pages. - BONUS ITEM: Approximately 9 inches x 7 inches Photograph of: 1948 press photo of Max Glatt comforting his brother Louis after an auto crash and waiting for an ambulance. - END - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Uncommon hardcover issue of this jointly authored sociological overview of the mid-60s British drug subculture. The general tone of the book is objective but concerned, if only because the focus rests largely on youth for whom drug use has progressed to crisis-level dependence. Numerous profiles and case studies provide interesting if one-sided points of entry to the discussion of various categories of illicit drugs. First edition. Small octavo (5 x 7.5 in.); viii, 117pp.; purple textured-paper boards, in dust jacket. Near fine, with lightly shelfwear and mild toning to textblock edges. In a very good jacket with rubbing and some loss of color along spine and flap hinges. "28s. net" price still present at base of front flap.
