Hardcover first edition of a book which was also published in paperback by Robin Hood Press in 1953 using the same cover design which has been attributed to Leonard Potts. Ex-library copy. The boards have faint tape marks to the centre at the top and bottom of the front panel which also has one tiny surface tear. One inch crease to the bottom left corner of the rear panel. Browning to the page edges. The endpapers have been reinforced at the front with tape along the hinge. There is a stamp to the front pastedown and several pen marks, some surface tearing and other marking. Tape along the hinge at the half-title page and the title page has a four inch piece torn from the right side. The text block is very slack with the hinges well exposed at page 32. Small piece of tape to the rear pastedown. The pages are browned but generally otherwise unmarked. The jacket has been cut down by a few mm at the top and bottom and has quite a bit of surface wrinkling but has nice bright colouring. Priced at 6/- on the front flap. First printing.

I believe there was a 1949 edition from Robin Hood Press. Extremely rare. The front cover has been removed unfortunately. The rear cover has a half inch chip out of the top left corner and a one inch closed tear to the left edge where there is some associated creasing. Browning and surface creasing to the rear cover. Small piece torn from the top right corner of the first page and the pages are browned with a little edge wear but otherwise unmarked. Postage charge will be reduced by £1.50 when the order is processed.

A previous owner has written the title in pen on the spine and they have also incorrectly written 'sequel to "Dainty was a Jane" at the left side of the front cover. Someone has also written the words 'Blonde Cute' under the title - this is quite faint. The staples are very rusty and there is brown marking at the left side of the front cover which also has two small edge tears and light surface wear. Surface creasing and discolouration to the back cover with a one inch torn patch at the centre, a small edge tear, a tiny chip to the bottom left corner and some numbers written faintly at the bottom. Tape marking along the left side of the front cover with a little chipping at the bottom. Rusty marks around the rusty staples at the front and back of the book. Light spotting to the first and last pages. The first page has something written at the top and a small tear to the bottom edge. Pages browned with a little creasing to the top corners in a few places but otherwise clean and unmarked.

This is the story of Johnny the Kid's rise in the Chicago rackets, originally driven by the need for cash to save his father's life. Quite a bit of surface rubbing to the front cover which has a small closed tear to the bottom left corner. The rear cover is missing. Quarter inch chip out of the surface of the spine which is also a little faded. Small chips to the bottom corners of the last two pages and the pages are browned but they are otherwise clean and unmarked. An extremely rare book.

The hard cover edition was published in 1953. The front cover has a one inch strip of tape along the right edge with the area covered by the tape now browned. The tape also covers about a quarte of an inch along the edge of the reverse with the discolouration over a one inch strip where the tape is attached to the front. Light chipping around the base of the spine and a tiny surface chip at the top. The rear cover is a little browned with slight chipping to the bottom left corner. Tight binding. The first page has a date in ink to the top left corner and a few brown spots to the bottom right corner. The pages are browned with a little edge wear but otherwise unmarked.

Rare in first edition. The first edition was originally published at 1/- net (although it was reprinted in the late 1940's at 2/- with different D/W artwork).
