Between 2001 and 2004, 623 samples of freshwater molluscs were gathered in Hamburg and examined. In this way about 2207 sets of data indicating the presence of the genus Sphaerium, Musculium and Pisidium were found which have been ecostatistically evaluated by applying different criteria. A method of mathematically evaluation of the degree of endangerment of the Sphaeriidae in Hamburg is presented. 9 pp., 2 figs, gr. 8.

Using published records and original data from recent field work and revision of Iranian material of certain species deposited in the collections of the Natural History Museum Basel, the Zoological Museum Berlin, and Natural History Museum Vienna, a checklist of the freshwater gastropod fauna of Iran was compiled. This checklist contains 73 species from 34 genera and 14 families of freshwater snails; 27 of these species (37%) are endemic to Iran. Two new genera, Kaskakia and Sarkhia, and eight species, i.e., Bithynia forcarti, Bithynia starmuehlneri, Bithynia mazandaranensis, Pseudamnicola georgievi, Kaskakia khorrasanensis, Sarkhia sarabensis, Valvata nowsharensis and Acroloxus pseudolacustris are described as new to science; Ecrobia grimmi (Clessin & Dybowski, 1888), Heleobia dalmatica (Radoman, 1974) and Hippeutis complanatus (Linnaeus, 1758) are reported for the first time from Iran. Additional field work is highly desirable for a more appropriate evaluation of the extant freshwater snail biodiversity in Iran. New taxa: Kaskakia n. gen., Sarkhia n. gen., Bithynia forcarti n. sp., Bithynia starmuehlneri n. sp., Bithynia mazandaranensis n. sp., Pseudamnicola georgievi n. sp., Kaskakia khorrasanensis n. sp., Sarkhia sarabensis n. sp., Valvata nowsharensis n. sp., Acroloxus pseudolacustris n. sp. 51 pp., 20 figs, br. gr. 8.

During a field trip to the western part of the Balkan Peninsula in 2016, investigations of several caves and karstic springs revealed six new gastropod species living in subterranean waters and resulted in some noteworthy faunistic records. Five of the new species are assigned to the genus Paladilhiopsis Pavlovi?, 1913, namely P. prekalensis sp. n., P. lozeki sp. n., P. szekeresi sp. n., P. wohlberedti sp. n., P. falniowskii sp. n. and one to the genus Plagigeyeria Tomlin, 1930, namely P. steffeki sp. n. New Albania and Kosovo distribution records are given for Iglica illyrica Schütt, 1975, Plagigeyeria zetaprotogona Schütt, 1960, Vinodolia matjasici (Bole, 1961), and the first georeferenced record is given for Saxurinator schlickumi Schütt, 1960. The most important environmental factors influencing habitat selection of these subterranean freshwater gastropods are briefly discussed. 23 pp., 34 figs, gr. 8.

The Freshwater Gastropods of the West-Palaearctis, Volume 2 covers the mollusc families Moitessieriidae, Stenothyridae and Bythinellidae of the West Palaearctic that contain 23 genera. A total of 464 species have been depicted on 521 photo plates with nearly 1600 professional photos, most of them displayed for the first time. For the depictions, the author worked predominantly with syn-, holo-, para-, and topotypes where possible. Identifications with type-materials are important because formerly species have been identified regionally, i.e. all Bythinella from Crete are mentioned as B. cretensis in the literature but on Crete, there are three distinct species known so far. On the other hand, many type localities have been destroyed in the last decades and a dramatic decline and loss of mollusc diversity have been detected. Maybe many species listed in this volume are nowadays extinct. It is not possible to distinguish the genera of the Moitessieriidae and Hydrobiidae because there is a large overlap in shell shapes and penes morphology between these families, so the identifications keys for both families are displayed in both volumes 2 and 3, to make identification possible. The basis of the species considered in this book are the lists of the Fauna Europaea project, published by Ruud Bank (2004, 2011a, 2011b) as well as Bank & Neubert (2018) with additions of species which have been described after 2011 and Vinarski & Kantor (2018) for Russia. These checklists have been expanded by species living outside Europe. The borders of the West-Palaearctic are Iceland in the north, the Ural, along the Caspian Sea to Iran in the east, the Near East and Northern Africa to Portugal in the west. In addition, species names in doubt have been compared with WORMS (World Register of Marine Species). 386 pp., 523 color plates with more than 1600 individual photos in addition to some drawings, hardcover gr. 8 [17.5 x 24.5 cm].
