In den Beständen der Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris entdeckte ich das einzig bekannte Exemplar des Malereienwaldes und beschloß, eine Auswahl der schönsten Abreibungen einer Veröffentlichung zuzuführen. Es gelang mir selbst, noch je eine Darstellung aus den beiden Teilen zu erwerben. Ich verdanke Herrn Dr. R. Goepper die Bearbeitung des leider nur fragmentarisch erhaltenen Textes [ZHOU shi hui lin hou ke, pp15-17]. Die Steinabreibung ist wie die Kunst des Holzschnittes erst sehr spät zur Kenntnis des Westens gelangt, und die gelegentlichen Beschreibungen in wissenschaftlichen Werken waren nur unvollständig. Mit besonderem Dank habe ich darum die umfassende Darstellung von R. H. van Gulik in Chinese Pictorial Art zu Rate gezogen und teilweise übernommen. Gerade die originalen Steinabreibungen vermögen uns mit dem monumentalen Charakter der chinesischen Kunst vertraut zu machen, nachdem nun auch der moderne chinesische Holzschnitt so viele Freunde zu erwerben vermochte. Die Methode der Abreibung auf Papier, die als Vorläuferin des Holzschnitts und der Buchdruckerkunst in Ostasien gilt, dient in modifizierter Form auch zur Abbildung künstlerischer Oberflächenbearbeitungen auf anderen Materialien (Bronze, Jade, Holz).
