They were the final words spoken by Yuri Danko, an officer in the medical division of Russia's security service, before his body was ripped apart by a spray of assassins' bullets. In possession of Danko's classified papers, Co…vert-One operative Jon Smith and CIA undercover agent Randi Russell have unearthed a terrifying global conspiracy that threatens to unleash a plague of immeasurable proportions. A Serb terrorist has been dispatched from Russia to spirit hazardous vials of deadly bacteria into the United States. His mission: deliver it to an unknown American government agent- a shadowy figure whose own motives for acquiring the bioweapon are made all the more unfathomable when both men are found murdered, and the strain is stolen. Now Smith and Russell must track it down, find the madman who possesses it, and stop him before he holds a defenseless world hostage with the power to render the human race extinct. Language: eng. hat they're going to do, I never would have believed it. It's insanity!" No Jacket. .describes the lives and experiences of a Los Angeles family against the sweeping, dramatic setting of the Queen City during the past seventy-five years. It is a giant of a novel, enormously engrossing, exciting, tough-sometimes brutal-sexually alive; a giant of a novel, the personalit…ies of its characters and in the personality of Los Angeles itself. For three generations the Brennans identified themselves with the great industries of Los Angeles-from building and real estate, to oil and airplane manufacturing. And for three generations there was nothing the Brennan millions and the Brennan power could not buy-from a mammoth corporation to a man's loyalty to a woman's love. The Brennans were among the outsiders, the curious and the adventurous, the promoters and the speculators, the ambitious and the greedy, who stormed into Los Angeles and built it and, perhaps, may have sowed the seeds of its destruction. In time, oil derricks defile the land, airplanes inv. illions bound up in it, making it, building it, tearing it to pieces, living and dying and going to hell and making money out of it and maybe even loving it." And through it all there is the bitter urgency that the Brennan line continue, that there alway (illustrator).

These historical documents track the cross-country pursuit of Harry Brown, a major figure in the infamous "million-dollar arson gang" operating out of Chicago during the 1930s. Document 1 (Seattle Police Report - Jun…e 22, 1935): Shows that the investigation reached the West Coast. The Seattle Police Department logged a formal "Officer's Report" linking back to circular files, preserving his physical description to look out for him locally. The verso is a standard issue Patrol Wagon Report which is not filled out. It is meant for logging daily patrol wagon routes, box locations, and arrests. Document 2: a Wanted Poster featuring his face, crime charges, and his unique Henry system fingerprint classification codes, which allowed departments nationwide to verify his identity if printed under an alias. The Chicago "million-dollar arson gang" conspired with property owners to set intentional fires to their own buildings, split the fraudulent insurance payouts, and occasionally kidnap or extort victims. The ring leaders included Harry Brown and the "Queen of the Arsonists" Bertha Warshovsky. They were exposed by co-conspirators who confessed. The charges were upgraded to murder when one of the fires they set killed a 17-year-old disabled boy who was unable to escape the burning apartment building. Harry Brown was capture, tried, convicted for his role in the fatal conspiracy and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Illinois state penitentiary system. He died in prison. Bertha Warshovsky said she had charged the owner of a house at Taylor and Racine her usual fee of $170 to set it on fire. Despite her central role, Bertha did not do any prison time by turning State's Evidence after being arrested in June 1935 and helping dismantle the ring. She testified against her former associates and various slum lords, admitting on the witness stand that she had personally started "more fires than I can remember." Bertha invented a very reliable, slow-burning incendiary device. For $5 to $10 a piece, she sold a gadget constructed of a short candle tightly bound with kitchen safety matches. Later, when she discovered that she, a heavy-set older woman, was less likely to arouse police suspicion walking into buildings than would her male counterpart, she began executing the "touch-offs" herself - charging up to $250 per fire. During the 1935 trials, the 225-pound Bertha fascinated the Chicago press by demonstrating her arson technique right from the witness stand. She requested a cigar, lit it, and blew on it to make the tip glow red. She then showed the jury exactly how she would tie the glowing cigar inside a bundle of safety matches to create a timed fuse, allowing her time to exit the building and hail a getaway cab before the gasoline-soaked paper balls exploded. The "million-dollar arson gang" operated with brutal indifference to human life. Property owners who wanted to collect insurance payouts would hire the ring to gut their buildings. The gang frequently torched apartment complexes while tenants were sleeping inside. This led to the death of the 17-year-old disabled youth in Chicago, transforming a massive insurance fraud case into a capital murder hunt that ultimately produced the Seattle police files offered here. Prosecutors asked for the death penalty for the owner of the building and rounded up many middlemen. Original Seattle Police Department Officer's Report with original gelatin silver print mugshots, attached with original 1935 staples." The original gelatin silver print mugshots are real photos with depth and silver mirroring, not a cheap ink print. This Original Case-File Ephemera / Dossier Leaf is an internal police document, much rarer than wanted flyers. Also: a matching Wanted broadside Flyer of Harry Brown, wanted for Murder and Arson. On recto of the first leaf of a bifolium, the verso of the second leaf of which carries the address to 'Messrs Vizetely [sic] Branston & Co / 135 Fleet St'. The firm, who traded between 1827 and 1837, were not only 'engravers and oriental printers', but publishers too: the item referred… to in this letter, 'The Young Lady's Book', had two editions published in 1829 and a third in 1832, and Jackson presumably contributed work. In fair condition, discoloured and worn. Folded for postage, with broken brown wafer adhering to the reverse of the second leaf. The letter reads: 'Gentlemen / I shall feel obliged if you can send me 4 copies of the Ladies book by bearer. If you cannot let me have 4 perhaps you will [?] to send that number to the country by parcel / I am Gentlemen / Yr Obtd Servt / J Jackson'. Jackson is not to be confused with the Royal Academician of the same name (1778-1848); the DNB states that the wood engraver Ebenezer Landels (1808-1860), resided for a time with the present individual in Clarendon Street.
