Condition: New. 677, 520 maps, 2,500 graphs. 230x160mm. HB. NEW. . Ground beetles and tiger beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) can act as excellent indicators of the conservation value of habitats. This work includes a quantitative analysis of a large set of original data. The resulting annotated list, based on strong empirical evi…dence, is an easy-to-use source for a variety of research areas such as bioindication, faunal studies, or biogeography. The underlying data for this work was derived from the evaluation of taxa caught using two recording methods: manual catches yielding more than 203,000 specimens of 520 species, and pitfall traps yielding more than 822,000 specimens of 231 species. In Switzerland, 523 species of tiger beetles and carabids have been recorded, totalling 550 taxa (species and subspecies). The total number is composed of 362 monotypic species, 144 polytypic species represented by only one subspecies in Switzerland, and 17 polytypic species represented by more than one subspecies (2 to 6 subspecies, totalling 44 subspecies).

369 pp., hc gr. 8.

In this volume of the series Fauna Helvetica, contributions by many authors inform on the 84 species known for Switzerland. This atlas assesses the actual knowledge about distribution and ecology of the species and subspecies present in Switzerland. The large amount of new and original data which was collected during the reevalu…ation of the Red Data List have also been taken into consideration. A description of the threats which endanger the Red Data List species and a catalogue of protection and maintenance measures to be put into practice complete this atlas. Contains previously unpublished colour illustrations by Paul-Andre Robert. 398 pp., 126 color drawing, num. distribution maps, hardcover gr. 8 [Éditions française].

Bumblebees represent one of the most important groups of pollinators. In addition to their ecological and economic relevance, they are also a highly charismatic group which can help to increase the interest of people in realizing, enjoying and conserving natural systems. However, like most animals, bumblebees are sensitive to cl…imate. In Climatic Risk and Distribution Atlas of European Bumblebees, maps depicting potential risks of climate change for bumblebees are shown together with informative summary statistics, ecological background information and a picture of each European species. Thanks to the EU FP7 project STEP, the authors gathered over one million bumblebee records from all over Europe. Based on these data, they modelled the current climatic niche for almost all European species (56 species) and projected future climatically suitable conditions using three climate change scenarios for the years 2050 and 2100. While under a moderate change scenario only 3 species are projected to be at the verge of extinction by 2100, 14 species are at high risk under an intermediate change scenario. Under a most severe change scenario as many as 25 species are projected to lose almost all of their climatically suitable area, while a total of 53 species (77% of the 69 European species) would lose the main part of their suitable area. Climatic risks for bumblebees can be extremely high, depending on the future development of human society, and the corresponding effects on the climate. Strong mitigation strategies are needed to preserve this important species group and to ensure the sustainable provision of pollination services, to which they considerably contribute. Sofia, Moscow. Pensoft. 236 pp., color photos, color & b/w illustrations, color distribution maps, color tables, hardcover gr. 8 [16.7 x 23.7 cm].

A brief introduction in German, French and English precedes the English/French determination key. Illustrated by 34 plates of line drawings, this key allows the determination of the specimens down to the genus level. The 102 plates showing important details will then lead the reader to the species observed in Switzerland. This key is completed for each species by a distribution map and two diagrams, showing the vertical distribution by thermal level, the other the phenology, the number of observations and their seasonal distribution. 375 pp., 136 plates, 3 tables, 330 maps, hardcover gr. 8 [bilingual French/English].
