First UK edition. 38pp. Max Picard (1888-1965) was a Swiss writer and philosopher, important as one of the few thinkers writing from a deeply Platonic sensibility in the 20th century. In this small volume he makes a penetrating study of the fragmentation of modern art, indicating that the disintegration of modern art corresponds to the disintegration of reality itself and the disintegration of consciousness. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some wear to the titling on the spine. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered light foxing, including a few marks on the title-page. There is also foxing on the fore edge of the text block and on some page it has seeped a little way into the fore margin. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is sunned. The bottom of the spine is lightly bumped and the top of the spine is more heavily bumped with a small nick.
