As stated by Gordon's wife, Ida, in the introduction, this was an edition begun by Gordon and Tolkien together, however, with Tolkien being busy at the time Gordon undertook to finish the work. Tolkien did provide assistance to the final edits after Gordon's sudden death in 1938, but this was some years later, when Ida, also a philologist, decided to complete Gordon's work.
