Schlieren, which grew from an agricultural village to an industrial town and eventually to a cluster of service firms and residential suburb of Zürich, and the Upper Engadine, the world famous mountain r…esort around St. Moritz in the Canton of Grisons.The authors have put together a vast collection of photographs found in archives of all sorts: local government offices, building companies, local and national newspapers, publishers of postcards, cultural heritage societies and amateur photographers. Such images have rarely been collected and analysed systematically.On Common Ground presents 250 of these images in a double-track, chronological sequence with Schlieren at the top and the Upper Engadine at the bottom half of each page. The concept reveals manifold references, discrepancies and parallels between the two places. It makes traceable the passing of time and all the changes it imposes at times synchronically, in some periods at a different pace in each place. Two short essays complement the pictures, looking at the socio-economic developments in both areas and providing background information about the search for the images at the various archives.Text in English and German.

Es gibt weder einen allgemein verbindlichen Ausdruck, noch einen kunstwissenschaftlichen Terminus, der sie genau und einleuchtend bezeichnen k…önnte. Ich folge deshalb der technischen Terminologie des Abbildungsverzeichnisses, in der das Wort Fotografie nicht vorkommt. Das soll nicht heißen, daß die Arbeiten mit Fotografie nichts zu tun hätten. Vielmehr verdeutlicht es eine besondere Exaktheit in der Sache, der ein korrekter Gebrauch der Sprache folgen sollte. Die Definition des Begriffes Fotografie benennt ein Verfahren, bei dem mit einem Apparat und lichtempfindlichen Aufnahmematerial beständige Abbildungen hergestellt werden. Nach diesem Prozeß existiert neben dem Wirklichen dessen Abbild in Form einer Fotografie. Dieser relativ einfache Sachverhalt trifft nur für die frühen Landschaften und Selbstporträts zu. Hier passiert die Realität ein Bewußtsein und einen Apparat, bevor sie als Bild von anderen wahrgenommen werden kann. In den neueren Arbeiten baut sich dagegen eine verwirrende Struktur von Abbildungsebenen auf, die sich als komplizierte Mischung aus gedruckten, gemalten, fotografierten und elektronischen Bildern aufschlüsseln läßt, die noch einmal fotografiert und reproduziert wurden. Ich denke, daß die Frage nach dem Wesen dieser Bilder Ulrich Görlich in seinen Arbeiten besonders beschäftigt hat. Um sie zu beantworten, reicht die Fotografie weder als Medium noch als Begriff aus.
