The introduction explains that the book is the diary written for a close friend who was imprisoned for being a conscientious objector in New Zealand in WW2. It was designed to keep him in touch with events in the outside world and especially happenings at Canterbury College, where both had been students together a few years before.

"As memory serves, the famous Wirths Circus paid two visits to my home town of Balclutha during my boyhood in the 1920s. It came by rail and appraently stayed just the one dramatic day. On both occasions the big top and its attendant menagerie tent were set up in vacant paddocks near our back-street house, once indeed almost directly across the road. The following reminiscences may have some subject interest outside its tentative story form.
