Magazine / Periodical
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. ANDY WARHOL and TV art in a 1955 issue of "Art Director and Studio News". Probably the most exciting thing about this issue is an article about television art that mentions Andy Warhol - named as Andrew Warhol in the piece - with an example of his work for that medium (a small reproduction); it's a very different sort of art from soup cans and celebrities - a kind of classic, but dramatic linear design, used for a show called "Silent Women". This magazine was one of the leading periodicals devoted to commercial art and design. Early issues such as this June 1955 issue, continue to be wonderful sources for ideas about and knowledge of Mid-century Modern Design, especially as it related to advertising art. . The dramatic cover design for this issue, with its collision of black-and-white photography with pastel shades of purple, was created by Jack Wolfgang Beck. While the issue is mostly in monochrome, there are a couple of pages inside that continue the purple adventure. This issue is also noticeable for its coverage of the awards presented to artists and companies for exceptional design in all areas of media at the 34th Annual National Exhibition of Advertising and Editorial Art & Design. Other artists are discussed, (many of whom have gone on to recognition and fame) with examples of their work (which includes photographers), and are recorded as being given awards at the Exhibition, or featured in articles are in the issue.
