Der Baron de Marivetz (1728-1794) hatte den erstaunlichen Ehrgeiz, alle physikalische Phänomene in eine Encyklopädie zu erklären! Gefragt und gesucht ist diese Ausgabe aber vor allen Dingen wegen der von Goussier entworfenen Tafeln. Unseren Bänden sind die großen von Goussier erstellten und kolorierten Tafeln Nr. VI-XIV beigebunden. Die Gesamtausgabe enthielt 20 Tafeln, wovon unser Exemplar zumindest 9 vorweisen kann. Baron de Marivetz, starb am 26. Februar 1794 in Paris in den Wirren des Terror-Regimes der Französischen Revolution auf dem Schafott. Er begann mit Goussier eine physische Geographie Frankreichs, die über eine Einleitung nicht herauskam (Paris, 1779). Die Idee eine Eiscreme-Fabrik zu betreiben, ging schief und er verlor den Großteil seines Vermögens. Louis-Jacques Goussier (1722 - 1799) war Mathematiker, Illustrator, Graphiker und Enzyklopädist. 1747 wurde er von d'Alembert für die Encyclopédie gewonnen. Denis Diderot bat Goussier zunächst zur Überarbeitung bestehender Abbildungen. Später wurden über 900 Graphiken bzw. Kupferstiche von ihm angefertigt, das heißt fast ein Drittel des Gesamtwerkes von insgesamt 2885 Stichen. "Cet ouvrage complet est très rare, une partie des exemplaires ayant été vendue à l'épicier, par suite du dérangement des affaires de Marivetz et ceux qui restaient chez Barrois le jeune à la mort de l' auteur ayant été livrés à la nation par suite de la confiscation et envoyés à l' Arsenal pour être employés à des gargousses". Exemplare mit Gebrauchsspuren: die Deckel etwas beschabt und verfärbt, insg. Berieben und teils etwas bestoßen, die Vorsätze etwas leimschattig, Band 3 mit Wasserrand, die Seiten teils gewellt, einige Falttafeln mit Verfärbungen durch leichten Feuchtigkeitseinfluß, gelegentlich leichtere Randläsuren und etwas wellig,Titel gestempelt.
