Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. About The Book: Netherlands India: A Study of Plural Economy examines the complex economic and social structure of the Dutch East Indies under colonial rule. The study explains how different ethnic groupsEuropeans, Indonesians, Chinese, and otherslived together in one political unit but operated in separate economic spheres. Each group played distinct roles in trade, agriculture, administration, and labor, creating a "plural economy" marked by limited integration and deep structural inequalities. The work highlights how colonial policies shaped these divisions, influencing education, wealth distribution, and social mobility. Overall, it provides a critical analysis of how colonialism sustained a fragmented and unequal economic system. About The Author: J. S. Furnivall, a British colonial administrator and scholar of Burma and Southeast Asia, developed the concept of the plural society. His influential works examined colonial governance, economics, and social change in Burma and the Dutch East Indies, though later critics highlight his Eurocentric assumptions and partial support of colonial rule and Andries Cornelis Dirk de Graeff (18721957) was a Dutch statesman who served as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies and later Minister for Foreign Affairs. A descendant of the influential De Graeff family, he married Caroline Angélique van der Wijck, had seven children, and is ancestor to Jan Jaap de Graeff.
