Rubbed, paper shelf-label to foot of spine. Marbled endpapers, title lightly toned. The sole edition of a rare collection of poems that is apparently the only published work of Yorkshireman Charlesworth Gray, of whom nothing is known. With an introduction 'to my Yorkshire Friends', the title poem occupies forty-four pages and includes musings on the Napoleonic war from both English and French perspectives, and also on the impact of early nineteenth-century emigration away from England to the Continent. Robert Cruikshank's (1789-1856) delightfully lurid illustrations for the work are typical of the contemporary unflattering caricatures that made his name. Here, as ever, he takes particular delight in lampooning the dress sense and exposing the superficiality of Dandies - the plates accompany a comical 'letter on commercial affairs', signed Mercator, that describes the flamboyant and eccentric outfits of Parisian shopkeepers and well as droll quips regarding the the business potential of sending woollens along with an 'Expedition to the North Pole' to sell to the 'inhabitants of those frozen regions', and a postscript requesting current market prices for lions and tigers as the author endeavours to 'pick up a few.at Timbuctoo'. COPAC and OCLC locate five copies in the British Isles (BL, Liverpool, Oxford, Strachclyde, and York Minster) and four in North America (Florida State, Free Library of Philadelphia, Kentucky, and Harvard). Not in Jackson. Size: 8vo.
