A historical detective and courtroom drama that analyzes the fate of the land we now know as Camp Pendleton of the U.S. Marine Corps, one of our nation's largest military bases. The approximately 208 square-…mile rancho was California's largest confirmed land grant when Andres and Pio Pico went to court with Pio's godson and Andres' son-in-law, Juan Forster, over ownership. Gray unearthed contemporary documents not used at the trial which bring a relevancy and fresh perspective to modern readers. Clark & Brunet 111.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. A dramatic response to American racism occurred in Los Angeles during 1855 when eighteen-year-old Francisco P. Ramirez published a Spanish-language newspaper, El Clamor Publico. Ramirez called upon a Mexican American majority to seize control of their destiny by electing themselves to public… office.Ramirez was a radical liberal in a town controlled by white conservative Southerners with antebellum values. Nevertheless, from 1855 to 1859, he railed against slavery and ridiculed those in Los Angeles who supported it. His demands for Mexican equality, the abolition of slavery, free elections, and education for women were well ahead of his time. He was the first civil rights activist in Los Angeles. In December 1859 El Clamor Publico bankrupted for lack of popular support. For three decades afterward Ramirez was involved in every major political and social movement of his day. He continued to champion equality and civil rights as a San Francisco newspaper editor and the only Mexican American lawyer in Los Angeles. A biography of the first civil rights activist in Los Angeles, a brilliant eighteen-year-old Mexican-American, Francisco P. Ramirez, published a Spanish-language newspaper, El Clamor Publico, from 1855 to 1859. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. The Latino Big Bang in California presents a Spanish transcription and English translation of a diary written by Forty-Niner Justo Veytia, a Mexican immigrant seeking riches during California's Gold Rush. Veytia's diary offers insights into the dilemmas and choices of an adventurous and ambitious young… mexicano and provides a detailed glimpse into the life of Latinos who participated in this tumultuous moment in California history. In doing so, Veytia's diary demonstrates that the US-Mexico War together with the Gold Rush constituted a Latino "big bang" in California that attracted large swaths of fortune seekers from across the Spanish-speaking world throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century. Combining archival research with quantitative methods to extrapolate demographic information about the persistent presence of Latino communities in California from the mid-nineteenth century to today, The Latino Big Bang in California shows how Latino migration and labor forever changed the course of California history.

During 1873 a jury trial took place in San Diego to decide whether Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of California, had been the victim of a fraud by his brother-in-law, John Forster. The Introductory gives an overview of both families and an early history of California.CONDITION: Hardbound red boards, gilt title on front and spine.
