The first edition of Lyra Urbanica; or The Social Effusions of the Celebrated Captain Charles Morris, of the Late Life-Guards, a scarce collection of poems from the British poet and former dragoon. Complete in two volumes. Posthumously published in 1840, two years after his death. In the publisher's original cloth, with a glit embellishment to the front board. Original end papers and half-titles preserved. Volume I contains a frontispiece of Morris engraved by William Greatbach, and a tipped-in publisher's original advertisement for The Letters of Horace Walpole between front free end paper and half-title. Despite not being a prolific publisher of poetical works, Morris was a notable poet amongst aristocratic social circles in London, being the bard and punch-maker for the famous Whig dining club The Sublime Society of Beefsteaks. So entertaining were his poems that his recitals became a permanent fixture at dinners and earnt him favour with the Prince of Wales. Known for his witty ballads that mocked Tories such as Pitt, this collection contains many he recited from the Society as well as those on the pleasures of love.
