The Regent is a 1788 tragedy by the British author Bertie Greatheed. It premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London on 29 March 1788. The original cast included Sarah Siddons as Dianora, John Philip Kemble as Manuel, Richard Wroughton as Gomez, James Aickin as Solerno, John Hayman Packer as Gerbin, Robert Benson as Pedro, William Bates as Diego, Richard Wilson as Servant, John Phillimore as Banditti and Sarah Ward as Paula. The Irish premiere took place at the Crow Street Theatre in Dublin on 5 July 1788. Although it was not a great success, it was nonetheless published and a German translation was issued in 1790.

This fine engraving was drawn and published by J.P. Neale 1818-1829. Ilustration comes with separate page of descriptive text. This illustration being a fine exterior view of Guys Cliff of Warwickshire, titled and dated. Size approx 6 x 5" (16.5 x 13cm). Ready for framing.

[First Edition]. 16 x 10 cm. Title page, (6), 67 pages. Modern cloth with gilt title on front board. Brown matching end papers. Very good condition. Binding rubbed and bumped. Internally dust dulled, but otherwise very clean. Nice copy.

With an epilogue by Mrs Piozzi, who had met the Greatheeds in Florence: Bertie Greatheed was a wealthy dilettante, and the Piozzis had visited his house in Warwickshire the previous summer, where he had read them scenes as he composed the play. Mrs Piozzi pronounced the play a great success (and was delighted at the reception of her epilogue), but in truth even the performances of Sarah Siddons and John Philip Kemble could not rescue it from comparative failure. This is one of two variants, with identifiable differences in signature L (the last two leaves) only. In this one (the rarer), there is no press-figure on p. 74, and an ornament of a four-leaved flower at the foot of p. 75.

Clean text with large margins, measuring 8.25 inches tall. The top-edge of the title, as well as the last leaf, is slightly browned. A few pages in the text have minor creasing to corners. Epilogue written by Mrs. Piozzi. First edition. Size: Octavo (8vo). Book.
