Condition: Very good. - Quarto [approximately 11 inches high by 8-3/8 inches wide], softcover. Printed self-wrappers. 48 pages plus 8 pages of black-and-white illustrations. The edges of the wraps are slightly darkened & there is a small stain to each wrap. Very good. Leading off this issue is the nearly 9-page long landmark essay by P. Adams Sitney describing "Structural film", a term he coined. Sitney identified the formal characteristics common in Structural films as fixed camera position, flicker effect, and loop printing ("the immediate repition of shots"). Among the other contents of this issue are interviews with George Landow and Bruce Baillie. There are articles on Stan Brakhage's "Mothlight with verse by Robert Creeley, on Rossellini's "The Rise to Power of Louis XIV" by Ken Kelman and on World War Two and American film by Lewis Jacobs. There is also an article by Tom Chomont on "Eros, O Basileus", a film by Markopoulos.

The eighth issue of this important literary and art magazine, edited by John Ashbery and excellently printed in Lausanne. Includes an article on The New American Cinema by Gregory Battcock, focusing on the work of Andy Warhol, Jack Smith, and Gregory Markopoulos (all of whose film work is shown in multiple plates). Subscription cards laid in. A light corner damp stain with attendant waviness affects plates and later pages (not musty). Otherwise an unmarked, generally sound copy with publisher's price stamp to cover and a little light outer soil and reading wear. Not Signed.

A superb double issue devoted to the experimental filmmaker Markopoulos, signed and numbered by him (no. 252 of an unspecified total), including contributions by Stan Brakhage, Gerard Malanga, Charles Boultenhouse, Gregory Battcock, Parker Tyler, Donald Weinstein, George Landow, Jan Wahl, Mary Batten, Harry Feldman, Elwood Decker, Curtis Harrington, Kaaren Klingel, Sitney, and Markopoulos himself. At the time he was trying to secure the print of his film 'Serenity' from errant producers, and 'Twice a Man' was soon to be released. The usual toning to the stock and, in part, to the front cover, which is a little rubbed with a couple of minor nicks, but Very Good all things considered. Signed by Author(s).

The young editor would produce issues focusing on the work of Stan Brakhage and running interviews with the likes of Jean Cocteau, Willard Maas, and Owen Land. This issue dedicated to entirely to the films of Gregory Markopoulos. Includes a cover design by Richard Tuttle predating his first solo exhibition by almost a year. A rare zine. No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Loose sheets of card, film notes done by hand are printed with plates in colour. Fine. These are in a box with a small tear at the fore-edge. Otherwise only minor marks. Included, loosely inserted, is an essay by Markopoulos on Beavers work,"Art Is Not Knowledge", in a limited ed. of 100 copies. It is presented by its author to Lady Casson, on 4th Jan 1975. The covers of 'Art is Not Knowledge' are clean and white, fine. These items would seem to have been produced at different times but may well have been presented to friends together with the original publication of the Film Notes and Plates for Still Light, as I have seen the essay with another copy. Acquired from Maude Lloyd, an admired leading dancer with Ballet Rambert in the 1930s. With her husband, Nigel Gosling a renowned art critic, she later wrote, influential dance books and reviews under the joint pseudonym, 'Alexander Bland'. When Rudolph Nureyev defected in 1961, Margot Fonteyn asked them to befriend him which they gladly did offering him freedom of their house. Gosling edited his autobiography. Nureyev wrote an admiring memoir of him in Observer of the Dance anthologising Goslings reviews, "He and Maude were like my family.". Signed by Author(s).
