The second and enlarged edition is dated 1824, and the third, edited and indexed by John Harland, came out in 1867. This work led to his election as a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and to his honorary membership of the Newcastle-on-Tyne Society of Antiquaries. hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Third Edition. Portfolio of Fragments Relative to the History and Antiquities, Topography and Genealogies of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster, Matthew Gregson â" Third Edition Publication: London, George Routledge and Sons, 1869 Formatting: Folio, pp. xii, 426. Condition Report: Very Good. The original green cloth binding remains structurally sound and firm, exhibiting expected but moderate shelf-wear, primarily consisting of light rubbing to the extremities and slight bumping to the corners. The gilt crest of the Duchy of Lancaster upon the front board remains remarkably bright and unoxidised. The spine cloth is intact, though it displays some minor fraying and wear at the head and tail, while the hinges feel secure and tight. Internally, the text block is securely bound; the pages are largely clean with some mild, scattered foxing mostly confined to the preliminary leaves and margins, which is characteristic for a volume of this period. Overall, a highly attractive and robustly preserved copy. Catalogue Note: This 1869 third edition of Matthew Gregson's monumental Portfolio of Fragments represents a high-water mark in 19th-century regional British topography and local history. Originally published in parts beginning in 1817, this subsequent edition, expertly edited by John Harland, a renowned Lancashire antiquary, is widely regarded as the superior 'best edition'. It marks the first time a comprehensive general index and a special index to the numerous coats of arms were included, greatly enhancing its utility. Profusely illustrated with woodcuts, folding pedigrees, lithographs, and featuring a magnificent title page printed in red and black, it remains an indispensable reference for the genealogical and topographical study of the North West. Because volumes of this significant size and weight are frequently found heavily restored, ex-library, or entirely rebound, encountering this third edition still housed in its handsome original publisher's green cloth is notably uncommon on the open market. An exhaustive and visually captivating Victorian survey of Lancashire's heritage, Matthew Gregson's Portfolio of Fragments delves deeply into the history, antiquities, and genealogies of the County Palatine. Woven together from a vast collection of historical documents, local records, and heraldic details, this sweeping volume provides a vivid cross-section of Northern English history. From the lineage of the Dukes of Lancaster to granular local topography, Gregsonâs opus serves as both a beautiful artefact of 19th-century antiquarian scholarship and a crucial resource for regional historians.
