First edition of this very scarce colour-illustrated sailing memoir of a tour of the Faroe Islands archipelago in the North Atlantic between Norway, Scotland, and Iceland in 1854. Rathbone & Greig mentioned in articles of the time that they intended to explore the islands, and on their cruise of the Yacht Maria, they visit the small villages, observe whaling, local customs, and the stark beauty of the Islands, along with their striking hand-coloured lithographs. The plates were lithographed by M. & N. Hanhart, and map engraved by Edward Weller (1819-1884), printed by A. & G.A. Spottiswoode. Worldcat locates 4 copies (Schiffahrtsmuseum, Yale, Danish Nat. Bibl., Royal Danish Libr Copenhagen); Abbey, Travel, 81 (sole color plate travel book for the Faroe Islands, lithographs reproduced for 150th Anniversary stamps in 2004).
