Mais, dans ce cadre volontairement rétréci, elle soutient une thèse dont les difficultés néchappent pas à son auteur mais dont la publication a paru à ses maîtres plus opportune que lélaboration dune somme où des idées personnelles prendraient place à côté des théories de ses devanciers. Le lecteur ny trouvera donc pas ce quil est peut-être en droit dattendre dun ouvrage consacré au fondateur du Principal : le bilan des tentatives qui Vont précédé pour donner à ce régime hybride et équivoque une explication satisfaisante pour lesprit, et un état présent des recherches poursuivies en divers domaines, dans lidéologie, le droit public, la pensée religieuse, lhistoire sociale. Non que le besoin de ces mises au point ne se fasse sentir. La production scientifique sur un sujet aussi contesté est si abondante et si dispersée que rien nest plus utile que les Reviews ou les Berichte où des spécialistes font une mise au point critique des résultats acquis. Mais justement la présentation dans la revue Historia en 1950 dun bilan des recherches sur le Principal augustéen, ½uvre de G. E. F. Chilver et plus encore la publication, au cours de la rédaction de cet ouvrage, de l'article Princeps dans la Real Encyclopâdie sous la plume particulièrement autorisée de L. Wickert mont détourné dune telle entreprise. Jai cru mieux faire en soumettant une solution nouvelle au public savant, persuadé que, si je navais pu atteindre Zarcanum imperi quaucun document consacré ne nous révèle et que la lettre des textes ne pourrait définir, jaurais du moins provoqué un renouveau de discussions qui peut être fructueux pour la science historique.
