Soft Cover. First Edition. First thus, in original wraps. Starrett (3) asserts that this book was published in 1873, preceding the George Routledge 1874 publication of Cobwebs from an Empty Skull. Joshi and Schultz (A3.b) assert a publication date of 1884, making it a reissue, although the material is slightly different than the 1874 edition. "Stringing a Bear" is original to this edition. This copy is good only, and in three pieces. The front cover through page 16 are detached from the main page block, and the page block is split the length of the spine at page 128/129. The spine printing is still mostly there and the entire book appears to be in one piece until it is handled. A scarce item in the Bierce canon.

Add to basketFirst Edition, preceding the US edition. Illustrated title page. 12mo. Purple cloth with gilt demon on front board and spine. 197. Upper hinge just very slightly shaken, and some light wear to the binding, including a small light coloured spot on the front cover, but a tight and bright copy of Bierce's first book. The 32 page publisher's catalogue at rear, with one inch torn off the upper corner of the last leaf. London, John Camden Hotten. The first collection of Bierce's writings to appear in book form, published during the author's stay in England (1872-75). The stories, aphorisms (or 'laughorisms'), invented reports and poems are of a particularly morbid and grotesque nature, and are often only saved from complete misanthropy by wit and ironic insight. These last two qualities point towards the talent and reluctant compassion that would manifest themselves in Bierce's later, best-known stories, such as An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge. Rare.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. no date [1873]. First edition of Bierce's first book, preceding the first American edition. 12mo plum pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and blind with the gilt devil on the front cover and spine. The title engraving shows a corpulent man roasting a baby over a spit. From the preface: "The atrocities constituting this 'cold collation' of diabolisms are taken mainly from various Californian journals. They are cast in the American language, and liberally enriched with unintelligibility. I have been assisted by my scholarly friend Mr. Satan. While the plan of the work is partly my own, its spirit is wholly his; and this illustrates the ascendancy of the creative over the merely imitative mind. I shall be content with the profit." Ironically, Bierce was never paid for this work. Spine tips worn but complete and sound with the very fragile endpapers (the front free endpaper frayed at the edges) and the 30-page list of ads at the rear. Covers rubbed but the gilt devils still prominent. A very good copy of this notoriously fragile book. Very scarce thus. 0.

First Edition. First edition. His third book. Dark fairy tales collected from his appearances in the British periodical "Fun"; illustrated with satirical wood engravings by the Dalziel Brothers. It should be noted although Starrett (4) contends an 1873 paperback precedes this hardcover, BAL (1100) proved the paperback was actually not published until 1884. Publisher's decorative green cloth stamped and lettered in gilt & black. BAL doesn't mention green but Starrett lists it as one of three cloth colors. Faded ownership notation on front endpaper, minor shelf wear, still very good to near fine.

Hard Cover. First Edition. First edition (preceding the US edition) of the author's first book, very good lacking a dust jacket. Dark maroon cloth, with gilt demon on front board and near bottom of spine. There is some loss of the cloth at the top of the spine (about 1/4"), and slight fraying at the bottom of the spine. The front endpaper is detached but laid in. The rear hinge is a little loose. With the bookplate (on front pastedown) and signature (on half title page) of Vincent Starrett, Bierce's biographer and bibliographer. A nice association copy, in all probability the copy Starrett was looking at when he compiled the first bibliography of Bierce's works, which was published in 1920.
