This studies the patterns and consequences of migration and urbanisation resulting from the increased oil wealth in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar. "A number of problems have arisen from the rapid urbanisation, especially water and housing provision. In the long term, the urbanisation process may break down the traditional human and natural ecological structures within the Arabian Peninsula" (Preface). Maps show the expansion of Medina, Jeddah, Riyadh and Kuwait over time. In contrast, AR Yemen had a much slower rate of development, and PDR Yemen experienced decentralisation after a period of extreme concentration under British rule.
