Pour aider nos collègues à réaliser cette adaptation nécessaire, nous présentons aujoud'hui ce livre, qui essaie de conduire les élèves, en un an jusqu'à une connaissance du latin qui leur permette d'accéder à la lecture cursive. La civilisation est étudiée en profondeur dans le souci de faire connaître aux élèves le contexte général dans lequel s'inscrivaient les textes qu'ils seront am…enés à traduire plus tard, et pour les empêcher de faire dire n'importe quoi à un auteur latin sous prétexte que c'est un auteur ancien. D'autre part, les faits de civilisation évoqués, les traits moraux caractéristiques des Romains sont destinés à commenter les grandes valeurs de notre civilisation et à montrer leur origine et leur justification. La langue est étudiée scientifiquement par l'appel constant fait à la phonétique et à la morphologie. Des notions de syntaxe importantes, comme la proposition subordonnée infinitive, sont expliquées très tôt pour permettre aux élèves de traduire et de créer très vite des phrases complexes. Nous nous sommes efforcés de lier notre exposé à l'étude de la langue française, l'exemple du latin servant à éclairer des notions de grammaire française et des « faits linguistiques » qui demeurent inexpliqués à l'intérieur de notre langue. Le vocabulaire fondé sur la fréquence des mots latins, ne fournit que des mots utiles ceux qui reviennent constamment dans les uvres de César et Cicéron. Presque toutes les phrases latines, données à traduire, sont tirés des ouvrages de ces deux auteurs. Ce livre présente des exercices nombreux et variés sollicitant à la fois l'intelligence, l'attention, le raisonnement et l'imagination des élèves. La méthode suivie dans ce livre donnera aux professeurs le moyen de juger, donc d'orienter à bon escient leurs élèves.
