Hardcover. In deutscher Sprache. pages. 204x128x20 mm.

Lacks the very map, as usual. Important Early Collection of New World Travels With a Lengthy Introduction by Sebastian M nster A nice example of the Paris printing of Huttich's geography, an important very early collection of New World material that includes accounts of Columbus's voyages, and other voyages initiated by Spain and Portugal. This edition contains the same text contents as the Basel edition of the same year. Often attributed to Grynaeus, but is more properly credited to Johann Huttich, who compiled most of the work. The work stems from the German-speaking, Protestant intellectual milieu that produced other important early geographical publications. Indeed, the volume opens with Sebastian M nster's 12-page description of the world map that was intended to accompany the book (but is lacking here, as usual), with directions on its use. Published in Paris at the expense of Jean Petit and Galliot du Pr . contains the same material as the Basel edition. The only difference between the two lies in the map, which in the Paris one was designed by Oroncius Finneus - Borba de Moraes. Johann Huttich (1490-1544) was able to access accounts of early Spanish and Portuguese voyagers to America while in Madrid as part of the embassy associated with Charles V's election as Holy Roman Emperor. Included herein are the three voyages of Columbus, as well as those of Vespucci, Pedro Alonso Ni o, Vicente Y nez Pinz n, Pedro Alvares Cabral, and Alvise Cadamosto. In addition to the Portuguese discoveries in Brazil and the East, Huttich incorporates accounts of Marco Polo, and material collected by Peter Martyr. There are also numerous accounts of other European voyages. Huttich's work is one of the earliest to bring together in a single volume a number of otherwise extremely rare contemporary accounts of the earliest explorers, some of which are virtually unobtainable. Contents of the volume here follows: Prefatio Simonis Grynaei ad Collimitium. Preface by Simon Grynaeus. Typi Cosmographici et Declaratio et usus, per Sebastianum Munsterum. Introduction by Sebastian M nster. Voyage of Cadamosto (c 1432-1488), Venetian explorer and trader. The first three voyages of Columbus Voyage of Pedro Alonso Ni o Voyage of Vicente Y ez Pinz n Third voyage of Vespucci Voyage of Pedro Alvares Cabral Narrative of the Indian Jos Vespucci's four voyages (according to the Cosmographiae Introductio by Waldseemuller). King Manuel's letter to Pope Leo X on the conquests in India Voyages of Ludovico Varthema Description of the Holy Land Three books by Marco Polo Book of the Tartars by Haython Two books on Sarmatia by M. de Miechow Account of the Muscovite embassy by Paulo Giovio On the islands rediscovered by Peter Martyr d'Ang. Book.

Later 16th or early 17th century blind-stamped brown leather over wooden boards, with some sympathetic restoration to corners and spine. Four raised spine bands. Boards stamped in blind with floral roll, with intermittent medallion bust decoration. Back cover with additional roll with floral decoration and heads of the Apostles Peter and Paul. 2 brass clasps, hinged with leather (one detached, but present). Title with printer's mark (repeated at the end), 2 woodcut illustrations in text, numerous woodcut initials, 25 leaves, 677 pages (correctly 577), 1 leaf. As usual, without the map by Sebastian M nster. First two gatherings with water stains and somewhat spotted, additional old dampstaining to latter leaves of well. Some marginal notes in an early hand. Title page toned, with old cross-out ink name. Latin inscription on front pastedown dated 1608. Important Early Collection of New World Travels With a Lengthy Introduction by Sebastian M nster This Edition With the Addition of Cortes's 2nd & 3rd Letters One of the earliest collections of voyages, originally published in 1532, compiled by Johann Huttich, with a preface by Simon Grynaeus (to whom the work is sometimes erroneously attributed), containing the voyages of Columbus, Cadomosto, Vespucci, Cabral, and part of the Fourth Decade of Peter Martyr, as well as additional non-American voyages. Notably, the present edition adds important accounts not found in earlier editions, including Cortes's 2nd and 3rd letters, as well as the narratives of Juan Zum rraga's and Martin de Valencia. Huttich's geography is an important very early collection of New World material that includes accounts of Columbus's voyages, and other voyages initiated by Spain and Portugal. This book stems from the German-speaking, Protestant intellectual milieu that produced other important early geographical publications. Indeed, the volume opens with Sebastian M nster's 12-page description of the world map that was intended to accompany this book (but is lacking here), with directions on its use. Johann Huttich (1490-1544) was able to access accounts of early Spanish and Portuguese voyagers to America while in Madrid as part of the embassy associated with Charles V's election as Holy Roman Emperor. There are also numerous accounts of other European voyages. Huttich's work is one of the earliest to bring together in a single volume a number of otherwise extremely rare contemporary accounts of the earliest explorers, some of which are virtually unobtainable. In addition to several handsome woodcut capitals, there are two woodcuts in the text, including an illustration of a snake wrapped around a tree (page 21) and a version of Vespucci's triangle (page 93), here in a cosmographic diagram representing the earth's sphericity. S. Leitch has written on Vespucci's diagram and its influence on the emerging field of cosmography. Vespucci s diagram was brought into the orbit of astronomic notation where it helped the viewer to visualize cosmographic principles. The itinerary of this triangle in early 16th century print culture tracks the merging of diagrammatic thinking of astronomical propositions with other genres in the nascent field of cosmography - S. Leitch, Vespucci's Triangle and the Shape of t. Book.
