Guibert est parfaitement contemporain : ses enseignements retrouvent même une modernité renouvelée par l'espace redonné à la manuvre. Il faut donc relire son Essai général de tactique, parce qu'il constitue un tournant fondamental dans la pensée militaire et se situe véritablement à la source de la modernité opérationnelle. .
