In poor condition. As is. Original boards moderately scuffed at edges and corners; both boards are attached to binding via cording only - VERY FRAGILE. Top corner of front board bumped & creased, leather chipped. Leather on rear board beginning to peel away from binding, most of the board is exposed. Decorated leather spine lacking - all spine compartments are empty. All edges of text-block painted red. Ex-library "Rules" plate found on front paste-down. Marbled front paste-down chipped at bottom edge. Ex-library ink stamp found on title page: Library of the Polytechnic Society of Kentucky. Ex-library ink hand-writing found at top edge of title page. Toning throughout text-block; with some light instances of age-staining. Ink stain found on top corner of pages 162-3. Finger-soiling found in a few instances on bottom corners. Ex-library card catalogue and envelope found on rear paste-down. Original binding intact, but very fragile. Perfect candidate for restoration. Please see photos. Nicolas Guisnée (died 1718) was a French mathematician. He studied mathematics with Nicolas Malebranche and was a protégé of **Guillaume de l'Hôpital. Engineer of the king, he was a royal professor of mathematics at the college of maître Gervais. François Nicole, Pierre Rémond de Montfort, Émilie du Châtelet and Pierre Louis Maupertuis were some of his students. He was named "associé gémoètre" at the Royal Academy of Sciences in 1707. **Guillaume François Antoine, Marquis de l'Hôpital, sometimes spelled L'Hospital, (1661 1704) was a French mathematician. His name is firmly associated with l'Hôpital's rule for calculating limits involving indeterminate forms 0/0 and ∞/∞ Although the rule did not originate with l'Hôpital, it appeared in print for the first time in his 1696 treatise on the infinitesimal calculus, entitled Analyse des Infiniment Petits pour l'Intelligence des Lignes Courbes. This book was a first systematic exposition of differential calculus. Several editions and translations to other languages were published and it became a model for subsequent treatments of calculus.
