Dans sa Préface, qui situe ce roman dans son époque et dans l'histoire de la littérature française, Gustave HELLENY dit ceci: "Ecrit sous l'influence des idées féodales et consacré vraisemblablement à l'instruction des jeunes chevaliers, il offre l'exemple rare d'un livre didactique moulé en quelque sorte dans une amusante fiction, où l'enseignement entre si parfaitement dans le cadre du récit, qu'ils se complètent l'un par l'autre et semblent inséparables".
