An important two-volume set of memoirs chronicling the turbulent mid-17th-century history of France. Guy Joli, Councillor at the Châtelet of Paris, provides an eyewitness account of the intrigues surrounding Cardinal de Retz and the Fronde, a series of noble and parliamentary revolts that shook France during the minority of Louis XIV. His text is supplemented here by Claude Joliâs manuscript account of Cardinal de Retz, as well as the Mà moires of the Duchesse de Nemours, another key Fronde figure whose testimony adds a vital aristocratic perspective. Published in Geneva in 1777, this edition reflects the Enlightenmentâs hunger for first-hand historical documents and political analysis. Such works were avidly collected in the late 18th century by readers eager to understand the roots of absolutism and resistance in France, just as the kingdom edged toward the Revolution. The bindings are contemporary mottled calf with gilt-tooled spines and contrasting labels, an elegant but workmanlike binding of the period. Despite surface wear, the set remains solid and attractive, with interiors generally clean aside from light toning. The presence of an early ink-stamp monogram suggests 19th-century institutional or private library provenance. These memoirs are of high historical importance, frequently cited in histories of the Fronde and in studies of Louis XIVâs formative years. Complete sets such as this are increasingly uncommon on the market. Geneva 1777 edition of memoirs by Joli, Nemours, and Claude Joli on the Fronde and Cardinal de Retz, complete in two volumes, contemporary calf bindings. Good; rubbed spines with surface wear, joints a bit tender but holding; interiors clean with only light toning. Ownership stamp to endpapers. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt with contrasting leather labels (tan and black), volume numbers gilt. Boards rubbed with age, spines showing surface wear but sound; corners lightly worn. Marbled paper sides in attractive period style. Purple ownership stamp with ornate initials to pastedowns Nouvelle à dition, exactement revue & corrigà e (1777).
