Lawrence on front end page. Illustrated by glossy black/white photographs and a map showing the Yukon Telegraph Lines, Railways, Telegraph Offices, Repair Stations. Guy Lawrence was, for 40 years, a lineman and telegrapher on the famous Yukon Telegraph Line. He first came to Canada with his artist father from London to take part in the great gold stampede of 1898 and gives a vivid and colorful account of the scenes and incidents at the Atlin camp. This is the only book ever written about the thin steel "lifeline" that ran 1900 miles from Vancouver through Ashcroft to Atlin, Whitehorse and Dawson City; and tells of the men devoted to their duties, living dangerously and in solitude in remote wilderness cabins, relaying messages, repairing the singing line, far removed from the amenities of civilization.
