Small bookseller's sticker tipped in on front free endpaper: "John J. Bodkin Co. . Catholic Book Store . Los Angeles, Cal." Former owner's pencil signature in top margin of title page: "Lewis C. Carson." Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, the bookseller's sticker, and former owner's signature. Covers are very clean and intact except for a few small marks and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. This is a thesis by H. Muckermann in which he argues that animals lack intelligence and only think and act based on instinct. The following statements toward the end of the thesis summarize its central argument: "Animals, then, do not possess intelligence in its genuine meaning. They are mere sense-beings." The following are the titles of the chapters: "The Humanizing of the Brute," "Instinct and Final Tendency," "Instinct and Consciousness of Finality," "Instinct and Sensuous Cognition," "Instinct and Sense-Experience," "Instinct and Intelligence," "The 'Intelligence' of 'The Lower Animals,'" and "The 'Intelligence of 'The Higher Animals.'" The book is divided into two main parts, "Instinct and Intelligence differ essentially" and "Animals have no intelligence.".

Otherwise clean and tight. Hermann Muckermann (1877-1962) was a German Jesuit priest, anthropologist, and proponent of "racial hygiene," which he nominally rejected upon Pope Pius XI's condemnation of eugenics. Muckermann nonetheless continued to teach eugenics in Germany and embraced Nazi ideology concerning racial purity. In this book, he condemns certain aspects of Darwinism but concedes that the theory of evolution is compatible with Christian faith.
