First Edition
1882 London, 1st edn, 304pp, b&w drawings and maps. Henry Seebohm (1832-1895) lived in Sheffield, northern England, where he owned a steel manufacturing business. He used his wealth to undertake ornithological collecting trips, including two to Siberia. The author journeyed to the Yenisey River via Krasnoyarsk in March-October, 1877. His narrative includes descriptions of birds, the tundra, the Ostyaks, Dolgans and Tungus, and travel by dogs, reindeer and steamer. Written by the celebrated ornithologist and world traveler, this text is written in an interesting way for general readers. Particulars of the geographical distribution of birds noted, with other commentaries on the rich natural wealth of the region. He travelled by sledge horse and Yak covering great distances, collecting bird specimens, drying the skins. This is an exciting narrative of observations on the local people, hiring of native help, staying in monasteries, hardship of the Artic, ice breaking, bird migrations and the discovery of two new bird thereto unknown to science. A very good copy, some wear top/bottom spine.
