Er habilitierte sich1956 für arabische Philosophie. Er lehrte zunächst als Dozent für antike und mittelalterliche Philosophie sowie Philosophie und Kultur des Vorderen Orients, seit 1960 war er Professor für Hebraistik und Arabistik am Vorderasiatischen Institut.
