From the foreword: "In der Landesbibliothek zu Dessau wird noch heute als eine besondere Abteilung die Büchersammlung verw…ahrt, die einst der 'gottselige' Fürst Georg, der Freund Luthers und Melanchthons, in seinem Besitze vereinigt hatte. Die Bezeichnung 'Georgs-Bibliothek' ist allerdings insofern nicht ganz richtig, als sich in ihr neben den Büchern des Fürsten Georg nicht nur solche Werke befinden, die älteren seiner fürstlichen Verwandten gehört haben, die er ja aber im Laufe der Zeit durch Erbgang oder Schenkung tatsächlich besessen haben mag, sondern auch solche, die seinen Brüdern und deren Kindern angehört haben, und demnach niemals sein Eigentum gewesen sein können. Die Sammlung zeigt uns aber trotzdem ein interessantes Bild einer fürstlichen Bibliothek aus dem Reformationszeitalter, denn es befindet sich in ihr fast kein einziges Buch, das nach dem Jahre 1600 erschienen wäre. Ein besonderes Interesse gewinnt die Sammlung aber dadurch für den Forscher, daß Fürst Georg selbst, bis zu einem gewissen Grade aber auch seine Brüder, zu ihren Büchern in einem stark ausgeprägten persönlichen Verhältnis gestanden haben, das nach zwei Richtungen hin zum Ausdruck gelangt. Einmal nämlich darin, daß sie in äußerst zahlreichen Fällen durch eigenhändige Eintragungen in ihre Bücher uns von sich und von ihren schöngeistigen Bestrebungen Kunde gegeben haben. Dann aber darin, daß sie mit großer Liebe für eine würdige äußere Ausstattung ihrer Bücher Sorge getragen haben. Und da wir aus urkundlichen Quellen wissen, daß die Bücher der fürstlichen Brüder zumeist - wenn nicht ausschließlich - in Wittenberg eingebunden worden sind, so gestaltet sich die Untersuchung, so weit sie die äußere Gestalt der Bücher betrifft, zu einem Beitrag zur Geschichte des Bucheinbandes in diesem Mittelpunkte der reformatorischen Geistesproduktion. Von diesen Gesichtspunkten aus schien mir die 'Georgsbibliothek' einer näheren Untersuchung wert, die ich hiermit den Freunden der Reformationszeit, ihrer Literatur und ihrer Kultur unterbreite.
