Athene-Minerva, von den Alten als göttliche Spenderin der Klugheit, der Einsicht und des weisen Rates, der Ausdauer und Tapferkeit, zugleich als Beschützerin erleuchteten Studiums und der bildenden Künste verehrt, war in der christlichen Ära zum allegorischen Symbol der Wissenschaft, des wissenschaftlichen Denkens und jedweder vom Geiste gelenkten und disziplinierten Betätigung geworden. Die griechisch-römische Kunst hat in allen ihren Zweigen mit der Darstellung der dem Haupt des Zeus entstiegenen Göttin ihr Höchstes geleistet. Selbst das antikem Götterglauben feindliche christliche Mittelalter räumte zuweilen dem Minervabild einen Platz in seiner Bilderwelt ein. Im Zeitalter des Humanismus wurde es zu einem allgemein verständlichen Symbol, das ohne Scheu in enge Beziehung zur sakralen Ikonographie gesetzt wurde. Der nachfolgende Aufsatz führt die Entwicklung des Athene-Minerva-Bildes in einer Auswahl erlesener Kunstwerke vor Augen. Den archäologischen Teil lieferte Frau Dr. phil. Helga Freifrau von Heintze vom Deutschen Archäologischen Institut in Rom, der für ihre Mühe Dank gesagt sei. Der nachantike Teil ist aus den Forschungen der Bibliotheca Hertziana hervorgegangen; er wurde bearbeitet von Dr. phil.
